2018 Spring Academic Bridge Program

We will begin processing SPRING Bridge applications on Monday, December 4, 2017. Please note – Applications will NOT be processed from December 18-31, 2017 because the DVC campus will be closed for the Winter holiday break.We will resume processing applications when the DVC campus re-opens on January 3, 2018.

Program includes:

  • Sociology 120 – (3 units)
  • English 162 - (3 units)
*classes are pre-selected by IEC. Students are not able to choose.

As an international student, our Spring Academic Bridge Program at IEC will give you the academic skills and personal confidence you need to start the first two years of your bachelor’s degree at Diablo Valley College (DVC). The Academic Bridge Program is designed to allow you to successfully transition from study outside of the USA to a full-time academic program. The BRIDGE includes 2 pre-selected academic courses which give you 6 units of university credit that are transferable and count towards your four year bachelor’s degree at all the California State and University of California campuses. Get a head start on your bachelor’s degree!

Academic Bridge Program also includes:

Study Sessions: Each Academic Bridge course includes a study session that students attend for additional assistance, study techniques, and tutoring with their in class work and homework assignments. Study sessions are proctored by highly trained teacher aides who work closely with the Academic Bridge course instructors. Study sessions are a fundamental part of the Academic Bridge Program and attending study sessions ensures student achievement.

Success Seminar Series Workshops: Once a week students will have an hour long Success Seminar Series Workshop focusing on keys to student success at the DVC and beyond. Success Seminar Series Workshops are presented by DVC staff, faculty, and international student alumni. Past topics have included Time Management, Transferring from DVC, Researching Out-of-State and Private Universities for Transfer, DVC International Student Club and the Importance of Being Socially Involved On-Campus.

Campus visits: Campus tours in the San Francisco Bay Area can include UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and San Francisco State University.

Pre-registration for DVC Spring or Fall semester classes: Students who are admitted into the Academic Bridge Program are given the opportunity to complete the online academic orientation and register for classes for the following semester early. Assistance is provided by IEC and ISAS staff as well as the DVC International Student Academic Counselor.

Activities: The Academic Bridge Program is not only about studying and learning, but there are many social activities included. In the past, activities have included tours of San Francisco, Sacramento, Napa Valley, Santa Cruz, Yosemite National Park, as well as Free Movie Days, Laser Tag, Bowling, Swimming, Hiking, and many more.

Admission Requirements:

1. Completed original DVC Application
2. $400 non-refundable program placement fee
3. $50 DVC application fee
4. $50 international express mail fee for all acceptance packages shipped to foreign address
5. 18 years of age or high school graduate with proof of high school completion (official transcripts)
6. Official proof of English proficiency:  minimum TOEFL score of 490 PBT* or 57 IBT, IELTS 5.5, ITEP 3.5, IEC Advance B graduate or ELS Level 109
7. Bank statement from sponsor indicating minimum of $22,392 USD available for expenses
8. Copy of passport

* Only TOEFL PBT tests taken inside the United States are accepted for admission.

Academic Bridge Program Placement Fee Non-refundable and due with application $400

Medical Insurance Insurance is mandatory and covers students from orientation to the start of the next semester; due the first week of class Varies
Tuition Tuition covers 2 DVC academic classes and is due the first week of class $2300
Homestay (per 8 weeks) Single room with 2 meals (Monday to Friday) and 3 meals on the weekends $1750
Apartment (per 8 weeks) Single private room
Double shared room (per person)
Triple shared room (per person)

*Student is responsible for books, materials and any transportation costs.

Academic Bridge Program Includes:

  • program placement fee
  • tuition
  • 6 academic units transferable to CSU and UC campuses
  • daily study sessions
  • success seminar series workshops
  • end of program activity

Not included:

  • airport pick-up/drop-off
  • books and materials
  • mandatory medical insurance
