Proyecta 100K Brings International Students
to IEC @ DVC!

(June 2, 2015) - A higher education initiative launched with the support of Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto and President Barack Obama brings 19 university students and professors from throughout Mexico to study English at the International Education Center @ Diablo Valley College starting June 29th.
“They will be integrated with all other IEC students from around the world,” said Denisse Padilla, office manager for the International Education Center (IEC). “They will have a mix of intensive English classes and exposure to American culture and college life. The program is a way for them to learn about the United States and American universities.”

At IEC, the visiting students start with testing to determine their English levels and then go through the four-week intensive English program. Not only do the students immerse themselves in the English language, they are treated to a variety of cultural activities including but not limited to a concert on the beach in Santa Cruz, touring San Francisco and Alcatraz, visiting Muir woods & Stinson beach, and attending a San Francisco Giants Game.

Proyecta 100,000 will increase cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries, with a goal to substantially increase the number of Mexican and U.S. exchange students in each other’s country.
Mexico ranks ninth as a country of origin for international students in the United States and 13th as a destination country in the world. This initiative hopes to boost those numbers, increasing engagement of the two countries in a positive way.

IEC serves as one of the host institutions for Proyecta 100,000. This is the second group that IEC has welcomed. In October 2014, 48 Mexican students and faculty spent a month studying at IEC. Their experience was extremely warm and positive. The staff, students and faculty at IEC look forward to making great memories with the next group!
